| NEW BEGINNINGS 2008 CAPOEIRA EXPLOSION The Fuse Has Been Lit!!
Late Breaking News! The Capoeira course at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark is going strong. Twenty Four high school students are spending five and a half hours each day reading, researching, watching and training Capoeira. At the conclusion of the five week course they will have completed the equivalent of six months of regular Capoeira training. I could really use some help. Anyone with daytime hours that wants to spend a day with some kids is welcome to come and help me with the class. They will join us at the Center for a Roda on Wednesday May 21st from 7:30-9 so please come and play with them. Anyone interested/available please let me know. The school is at 520 King Blvd in Newark, it is near Rutgers and secure parking is available. The new group shirts have arrived. They are $17 and are available in Adult & Kids t-shirts and Women's tank tops. You can purchase your new shirts at the Center at any time. SCHEDULE UPDATE Samba class is back on hiatus as the teacher has been having transportation issues. Leoa is looking for other dance teachers to fill in the time slot. Axe, Orixa and African dance teachers are being sought. Saturday class from 12:30-2 is taught by Professora Papaya from Capoeira Angola Palmares. She is an excellent teacher and a fantastic Capoeirista. We are extremely happy to have her join our teaching staff. * As soon as it gets warm we will schedule a monthly street roda. As we prepare for outdoor rodas we will have Friday night rodas with Samba & Maculele open to the public starting in March.
* We are looking to partner with local storeowners to provide Class Cards to shoppers in exchange for posting our new posters being created by Adam. If you know a local storeowner please let us know so we (or you) can contact them.
BELLY DANCE PARTY One Sunday a month from 6:00 - 8:00 join Audie & friends for a Shimmy Shake Belly Dance Showcase & Dance Party. With special guests; Lateefah and Raqs La'Majali, Audie, Daughters of HetHaru, Chandra and more. Audience participation is encouraged. There will be dancing, dancing and more dancing, plus food. Admission is $15 Includes Middle Eastern Buffet and show. Ever wanted to learn more about Raw Food, and what you will need to prepare it? Come join us for an evening of delicious Raw foods, a live Raw food preparation demonstration and receive information regarding the tools you will need to make Raw Food preparation easy. Please bring a Raw, Vegetarian dish or snack to eat and share or simply just an open mind. A donation will be asked for admission to benefit the program providing educational supplies to children in Brazil. For more information contact Sereia at cameronboyle@comcast.net. * Sadly, on March 1 the 5 Class Card cost became $60 which is $12 per class. Still a bargain from the drop in rate of $15 per class, but nowhere near the bargain of a monthly card. RECESSION: I know that the government refuses to use the word but I pay bills each month and I would swear we are in a recession. This is not a reason to stop training Capoeira. Zero percent interest financing is available on Capoeira classes for 2-6 months. Please see a representative in the office for more information.
EVENTS May 21st open roda at the Center. Please come and play. May 23rd Brazilian Capoeira Festival at Newark City Hall. Come play Capoeira under the Rotunda from 6-9. June 7th we will meet at the Center at 9am to march in the Montclair African American Heritage Parade. All are invited to march with us in the Parade. June 14th we will meet at the Center at 1pm to participate in the Montclair Crane Park Festival again. We will walk down the street and have a roda in the park. All are invited to play with us in the park. We have been invited to march again in the July 4th Parade and will be performing after the Parade in the park. We will meet at the Center at 9:30 to walk up the street to the start of the Parade

Lastly, there are many CD’s & DVD’s that were borrowed in 2007. Please return them to the Center. We need them for classes. |
